December 2008 - Publication
Woohoo, two of my photographs were chosen for inclusion in the annual book of photographs published by the Photographic Center Northwest. This one is my all time favorite and is of the children at Koh Ker school taken on my trip there January of 2008.
December 2008 - Fundraising
On December 31 of 2007 I was in Koh Ker Cambodia to photograph the work of the Ponheary Ly Foundation. It was our first day in Cambodia, and our first day with the PLF. After a half hour of handing out food, uniforms, and tourist donations, it became clear that these kids needed so much more. Nearly a third of them turned out to be ill with either malaria, dengue fever, or tuburculosis. They needed medical attention and they needed it fast.
The Ponheary Ly Foundation, chartered only with providing uniforms and school supplies took a leap of faith and committed to providing what these kids needed. A doctor was hired, medicine was purchased, a breakfast program was started, and here a year later all of the kids are much healthier and happier. Enrollment has boomed to the point that they needed a new classroom to handle overflow. So when the president of the PLF posted on her facebook page that they could build a new one for only $800 we jumped at the chance to help. We built a website with a chipin widget and invited friends and fans to donate.
This shot of the nearly completed building with desks out front, was sent to us by the PLF.
November 2008 - Volunteer Photo Mentor
As soon as I got back from the mission to Guatemala, I got a call asking me to volunteer at Aki Kurose middle school in Seattle. Working with the great folks from Bridges to Understanding I helped mentor 5 teams of kids in photography and digital story telling skills. The kids did five stories on "Energy," "Jobs," "Homelessness," "Hunger," and "Poverty."

October 2008 - Volunteer Teaching Journey
One of the big highlights of my year was the opportunity to lead the first-ever Design4Kids teaching trip to Santiago Atitlan in Guatemala. Working with our Guatemalan partners, Fotokids we lead 6 creative professionals in a week-long workshop that taught graphic design, marketing, photography, customer relation skills to 10 very talented teens. The workshop was a big hit with kids, volunteers, and the folks at Fotokids, that we plan to offer it again in 2009.
See more pictures and read stories from the Design4Kids blog we kept during the trip.
August 2008 - Publication
My portrait of painter Cynthia Knox is chosen to illustrate an article about her in a national magazine.
July 2008 - Publication
The Ponheary Ly Foundation chose several of my photographs to illustrate their new fund raising brochure. My favorite is this one of a boy riding his bike to school past Sra Sreng the ancient royal bathing pool part of the vast temple complex of Angkor.
June 2008 - Engagement Portrait
Kyle and Natasha were a fun couple to work with. I photographed them for their engagement in the front yard of the brides mother.
The main challenge working with them was the fact that Kyle is quite a bit taller than Natasha. We overcame this by seating the two of them for some casual yet intimate shots.
June 2008 - Exhibit Fundraiser
Working in cooperation with local partners, Crooked Trails I exhibited 12 portraits of Cambodian children as part of the annual Faces of Hope fundraiser.
The beneficiary of this year's event was Maiti Nepal, a non-profit in Nepal that rescues and rehabilitates young women from sex trafficking. This year we raised $1,500.
