Statement
While I'm traveling, interesting and surprising scenes seem to unfold before me. When they do, I take a picture then forget it. Forgetting is crucial, it sets me free from expectations. Free to explore and discover new possibilities later. Not every shot has that potential. The best images find a way of surprising me a second time. They're the ones I choose to share with others.
Biography
In one of my earliest memories, I'm five years old, pushing and pulling the muscles around my eyes to stretch, blur, and otherwise modify the appearance of my environment. I did that sort of thing a lot when I was young, frequently experimenting with the appearence of things by employing different optical modifications. I guess those were the origins of my life as a visual artist, because in many ways that's what I continue to do today. Now I use cameras, lenses, and computers to capture, adjust, and modify the appearance of my surroundings. I try to make what I see align with what I feel.
Although my professional training was in photography, I have made most of my career in the field of graphic design. Except for a few adventures, the bulk of that time has been spent working for a large aerospace company, designing for both the printed page, and for oral presentations.
When my daughter graduated from high school she and I fulfilled a life-long dream of traveling together to the other side of the world. She chose India, and in June of 2001 we journeyed there for a whole month. I took a little point-and-shoot camera because I knew if I brought along serious equipment the trip would become about my pictures rather than about our relationship. When I got back I saw that there were several potentially good images lurking in the cheap machine prints; I thought "if only I could print them myself."
Armed with that idea, and with the skill I had already gained using image editing software, I decided to investigate digital printing. That's when I discovered the beautiful results possible printing with a photo-quality giclee (French for inkjet) printer. That changed my life, re-ignighting my love for photography, and passion for travel. Now the pursuit of both consumes much of my free time.
I shoot with both film and digital cameras, then work with my favorite images using software tools. I mostly only use the software to make fairly straight forward adjustments, generally preferring to keep the basic essence of the original scene without contrivance, however I do not make that a rule. My only rule is that in order for me to share it with others I have to first love it myself.
